The Golden Tour Riga & Ventspils, Latvia Jimi Tenor did a quick Latvian tour with Nicole Willis in October 1999, playing at Riga (Oct 8) and Ventspils (Oct 9). Ivars Zalkalns of No Rest Promotions reported that the gig at Andaluzijas Suns in Riga was the best of the two. "Jimi and Nicole played for about a hour and a half for a remarkably excited audience. Jimi said that such people can only be found in Japan. The atmosphere was extremely good." The Ventspils show which took place at a cinema called Rio wasn't quite as good. "Half of the people there hadn't heard about Jimi and didn't really know what to expect. When they started to play, Nicole had some problems with her microphone and however hard she tried to tell the soundman, nothing happened. In the end the soundman just said 'All is alright. Simply she is a bad singer'. Anyway Jimi was as cool as ever, and so was Nicole." Nicole's comments: "The show in Riga was exciting! The audience were well familiar with Jimi's material and gave him a warm reception. The audience were generous in supplying addition champagne, some of which I served up and the rest ended up all over the stage as well as the most enthusiastic fans!"
"The Ventspils show was less successful as we had a pretty old school sound man who seemed to think it was his show! Although the audience was keen to listen to Jimi's work (appearing less familiar with the material) they really didn't get a fair representation of Jimi LIVE. I liked the Styrofoam/cling film installation at the venue." "The two Ivars were gracious hosts and brought us to the local eateries for some rocking Latvian food! We wanted the real shit and we got it!" |
